Above, a 1530 petition, bearing the red wax seals of more than 80 English parliamentarians, urging Pope Clement VII to grant King Henry VIII an annulment of his first marriage.

Wrote Frances X. Rocca in a May 7 Wall Street Journal story, "When the Pope wouldn't do so, Henry founded the Church of England, which did."

The petition is part of the show "Lux in Arcana: The Vatican Secret Archives Reveals Itself," up through September 9 at the Capitoline Museum in Rome.

The exhibition features 100 original documents from the Vatican Secret Archives shedding light on 12 centuries of history.
