Trigonometry in a nutshell
Hey Robert- this is what we were talking about!!!
When I think back to high school trig and recall the names of the various functions — sine, cosine, secant, cotangent et al — I was so intimate with, it's like remembering a journey to a foreign country that no longer exists.

A Guinness for Blow
Fashion Report | Guinness Buys Blow Collection
Mike Coppola/Getty Images for NARS; MJ Kim/Getty ImagesDaphne Guinness, left, intends to keep the late Isabella Blow's collection as a single entity, not to be separated.
Daphne Guinness, the art and fashion collector, has bought the entire Isabella Blow wardrobe, including seminal pieces by the late designer Alexander McQueen, which was to have been sold by Christie's in the fall.
"It's Issy – it's her D.N.A, it should not be scattered to the four winds," said Ms. Guinness, who was a passionate follower of Mr. McQueen's work and his greatest supporter after Ms. Blow's suicide in 2007. Ms. Blow had championed Mr. McQueen's work from the start of his career.
The 90 McQueen outfits, along with dresses by John Galliano and hats by the milliner Philip Treacy, were to have been put up for auction in September. Patricia Frost, director of fashion and textiles at Christie's in London, called the collection "unique" and said it showed that Mr. McQueen "really deserves his place in fashion history."
Ms. Guinness is an heiress to the Irish brewing family and was divorced in 1999 from Spyros Niarchos, son of the Greek shipping billionaire Stavros Niarchos.
The collection of clothing is being sold by Ms. Blow's estate, under the guardianship of her sisters, and will now be kept together as a single entity.
"Like any artist, it should not be dispersed, but remain as a monument with people having access to it," said Ms. Guinness.

Fake Swimming Pool
Designed in 2004
by Buenos Aires artist Leandro Erlich.
"In one of the courtyards of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa,
is a swimming pool framed by a limestone deck.
When seen from the deck, the pool appears to be filled with deep, shimmering water.
In fact, however, a layer of water only some 10 centimeters deep is suspended over transparent glass.
Below the glass is an empty space with aquamarine walls that viewers can enter."

A note on shadows
Constant readers will know that as a rule I crop photos very tightly, with no more than a pixel or two of margin around featured objects or people.
Yet once in a while I'm faced with a quandary, in that sometimes shadows are integral to a photo's effectiveness.
Consider the two above and below.
Which do you prefer?
Or how about this
and this:
Or this
versus
this?
